From Ledgers to Lessons: Why I Started This Blog

Hi there — and welcome!
I’m Rhys Calloway, founder of Calloway Accountancy, a family-run firm based in Tonyrefail, Rhondda Cynon Taf. I started this blog to share the real, behind-the-scenes lessons of growing a small business, mastering the accounting journey, and finding clarity in a fast-paced world.
Who I Am and Where It All Started
Back in 2016, I began studying AAT — not because I knew accounting was my calling, but because I enjoyed solving problems. As the modules got tougher, I realised I actually loved it — especially the logic, the structure, and the way small changes could make a big impact for real people.
By 2018, I’d successfully completed AAT Level 4, and decided to go further — enrolling at the University of South Wales to study ACCA in 2020.
Fast forward to 2021, I’d passed all the knowledge papers — and by 2023, I’d gone on to complete the strategic level too.
This blog is the next natural step: a place to reflect, share, and hopefully help others on a similar path.
What You Can Expect Here
From real-world business advice to study strategies and small wins in client work — I’ll be covering a mix of topics including:
Running a family business from the ground up
Common mistakes small businesses make with tax or bookkeeping
What I wish I knew earlier when studying AAT or ACCA
Productivity and mindset tools that keep me focused
CIS advice and industry insights for construction-based businesses
And the occasional side project, tech tool or personal reflection
Whether you’re a fellow accountant, a student, or a small business owner, my goal is to make this blog a useful, honest, and practical space
